Clocks are posted in every examination room and area, so you don't need (and can't bring) a watch or any timing device. If it's on this list, leave your own version at home. Your favorite pen won't make it past the door.

What You Can Bring

Personal items have to fit inside a one-quart clear plastic zip-top bag. Inside that bag, North Carolina permits:

• Your Driver's License, Photo Identification Card, Social Security Card, and health insurance card
• Your hotel key and car keys
• Money and credit cards
• Reading glasses and sunglasses
• Lip balm, in its original manufacturer container
• Non-prescription eye drops, in the original container
• Menstrual products, in their original package or wrapper

Two more items are allowed outside the bag, one per session each:

• One water bottle or container. Any color or size, but it must be completely clear with no design, writing, or label, removable or not.
• One container of hand sanitizer for personal use, any size, in its original manufacturer container.

The Code of Conduct spells out eye drops and menstrual products but doesn't lay out a general procedure for prescription medication. If you need Rx meds during the exam, contact the board about a testing accommodation rather than assuming you can carry them in.

What to Leave at Home

North Carolina's prohibited list is long, and items get confiscated at the door. Leave these behind:

• Weapons of any kind, including any pocketknife or multi-tool with a blade.
• Your own pens, pencils, or erasers. The board provides them.
• Any watch or timing device. If you bring one, it's confiscated and not returned until the end of the exam on Wednesday.
• Cell phones, external keyboards, keyboard covers, a computer mouse, adapters, Fitbits, activity trackers, or any other electronic device.
• Books, notes, printed or written material, CDs, DVDs, or bar review materials once you're inside the building.
• Head coverings other than religious ones, unless you have prior written board approval.
• Purses, handbags, backpacks, bookbags, briefcases, tote bags, laptop bags or covers (unless completely clear), wallets, and eyeglasses cases.
• Food in any secured area, unless permitted in writing as an accommodation.

Laptop and Software

North Carolina runs the written portion (MPT and MEE) on ExamSoft's Examplify. A few requirements matter here:

• Register your laptop between May 19 and June 15, 2026, and make sure the $125 laptop fee is received by June 15 (that's a received deadline, not a postmark one).
• Complete two Examplify mock exams and return them before the published registration deadline. Do these early so you catch any device problems with time to fix them.
